Your Will, sorted properly — without leaving home

The law decides who inherits, through the Rules of Intestacy — not you. An unmarried partner may receive nothing at all, however long you have been together. Stepchildren you have raised may receive nothing. Your estate could pass to relatives you would never have chosen, and if you have no close relatives it can pass to the Crown. A Will puts the decision back in your hands.

A Will only takes effect when you die. An LPA protects you while you are alive but unable to make decisions — after an accident, a stroke, or with dementia. Without one, your family cannot simply step in; even a spouse cannot access your sole accounts. They would have to apply to the Court of Protection, which is slow, stressful and far more expensive than an LPA.

Yes. Your consultation is by video call or telephone, your documents come to you by email, and I will supervise your signing over video so you know it has been done correctly. If you would prefer to speak by telephone throughout, or to meet in person by arrangement, that is fine too — I will find an approach that works for you.

Not at all. Plenty of clients prefer the telephone, and a video call needs nothing more than tapping a link — no apps, no accounts, no downloads. If you would like a hand getting set up, just say and I will walk you through it. Nobody is turned away because of technology.

Most Wills are ready to sign within a week or two of the initial consultation, depending on how quickly you come back to me on the draft. LPAs are drafted just as quickly, but bear in mind the Office of the Public Guardian currently takes around 20 weeks to register them — so it is worth not putting it off.

Yes. The fee for your matter is agreed in writing before any work begins and does not change. The only separate cost is the government's £92 registration fee per LPA, which you pay directly to the Office of the Public Guardian — it does not pass through me.

DIY kits sit behind a great many of the Will disputes that reach the courts. The commonest problems are signing or witnessing the document incorrectly, which can invalidate it entirely; a beneficiary or their spouse acting as a witness, which costs them their inheritance; wording so vague that families end up arguing over it; and no provision for what happens if a beneficiary dies first. These errors usually surface only after death, when they can no longer be fixed.
